Apple SIM is one to watch

Some may say that this week’s Apple Event was a bit lacklustre- they’d already leaked the new iPad models and we knew Yosemite was coming. While the Retina iMac and new Mac Mini are great additions to the product line, I think the most interesting and disruptive tech they introduced was the Apple SIM.

Apple’s unique place in the market gives it extraordinary power over carriers, which are notorious for being difficult to work with and, often, stuck in their ways.

…But, as with the introduction of the micro-SIM on the original iPad, this is a tell by Apple. It’s a warning that the next iPhone will be using reprogrammable SIMs — and if a carrier would like to offer that iPhone, it had better start getting ready. It’s easy to imagine that Apple could just eliminate the tray altogether, leaving uncooperative carriers on the sideline.

Think about how this could work in future versions of Mac portables and even further iterations of the Apple Watch. If all the technology and connectivity options you need to communicate are completely included in your next device, then all you’ll need to do is partner with the relevant data carrier for your region without having to faff about at the local phone shop getting a SIM and a deal.
